Sustainable Practices

At the Good Food Store, sustainability is a consideration in all we do, from the products we choose to carry to daily operations to our packaging choices and how we manage our waste stream. We are proud of the measures we already have in place and conscious of the need to keep improving and doing more.
The Good Food Store is proud to support Missoula’s ZERO by FIFTY Zero Waste Plan and is committed to doing our part to move our city forward sustainably.

Trying to ditch disposables? So are we. Though we always try to choose recycled, recyclable, and compostable when single use options are necessary, our focus is on offering reusable alternatives wherever we can.

Read about a few featured practices and programs below.

Bag Re-use

We gladly accept paper shopping bags for re-use. We take back our own and other stores’ bags, clean and in good condition, and offer them as an option at checkout.

Eco-Takeouts

Introduced in 2012, eco-takeouts are durable, reusable BPA-free plastic containers that can be used in the store for items where health department regulations otherwise require a single-use disposable.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Stop by the Customer Service desk and pay a $5, fully refundable deposit for revolving use of a single eco-takeout container.
  2. Select one of three styles – large or medium clamshell or “bucket.” The container you receive has been washed and sanitized in our commerical dish room, in compliance with health department requirements.
  3. Take your sanitized eco-takeout and fill it yourself at the Deli’s self-serve food bars or in Bulk for those marked items where home containers are prohibited. At the Deli or Meat & Seafood counters, hand your eco-takeout to a staff member and we’ll be happy to package your selection in it.
  4. If purchasing items sold by weight, your cashier will deduct the weight of your eco-takeout container when ringing you up.
  5. Enjoy your food and give your eco-takeout a quick rinse at home. We do not recommend you microwave food in your eco-takeout.
  6. Bring your used eco-takeout to the Customer Service desk and exchange it for a new, sanitized container in the style of your choice. Compliance is critical for this program – you must use a new, sanitized container each time.
  7. Lose your eco-takeout, forget it, or love this option so much you need more than one? Pay a $5 deposit per container for additional eco-takeouts. Have more containers than you need? Return them for a refund of your deposit.

Glass Jar Program

In 2020 we began packaging many of our signature house-made deli offerings in reusable, returnable glass jars. We had such a positive response to the returnable packaging that we steadily expanded the program to include almost all deli offerings.

When purchasing an item packaged in a jar, a $2 deposit is applied at checkout. On your next visit, just hand your clean jar and lid to your cashier and receive your $2 per jar deposit back.

It’s that simple.
