Large Study Finds Calcium Supplements Are Safe

A large, comprehensive study has found that calcium supplements do not—as some previous research has suggested—increase risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, or cardiovascular disease. Published in Osteoporosis International, the research tracked 74,245 women from the Nurses’ Health Study over 24 years. During that period, as calcium supplementation went up, risk of coronary heart disease went down (this is known as an “inverse association”). The study is notable for its scope and duration and because it counters other studies showing an association between calcium supplements and cardiovascular disease.
